It had been a long drive from Smallville to wherever it was they were now. Honestly, Lana hadn't been paying attention. There had been a little talking in the car, but she had mostly listened to whatever conversation was going on, fiddled with her phone or iPod...or watched Sam from the corner of her eye. She couldn't exactly put her finger on it, but there was something very familiar about him, like she'd met him somewhere before. But if she had, she was sure she would have remembered him.

Now they were all settling into their rooms. As she expected, Chloe was wholly set on sharing a room with Dean instead of her. Hopefully there wouldn't be too much noise filtering in from the other side of the wall.

Lana set her bag on one of the beds and sat beside it, starting to pull off her shoes and make herself comfortable.

"I seriously doubt that, she said with a smile, "but I understand if you don't want to tell me." People kept secrets for a reason, after all, and Sam certainly had some. She had been around enough men with big secrets to tell.

"Let's just say I'm not your average normal guy," he popped a dumpling in his mouth, eating it and then swallowing.

"So, tell me something really random about yourself."

She grin at that. Of course he wasn't. No man she met ever seemed to be your average normal guy.

She thought for a moment, taking that time to eat. Something random, huh? She'd already told him she used to be a cheerleader. What else could she say?

What came to mind made her giggle a little.

"Actually...my last year of high school, I dated a guy who looked a lot like Dean."

Not exactly the kind of thing you say on a first date, but then again, it wasn't like she expected this to go much of anywhere.

Sam stopped mid-chew. That was scary for two reasons. One, it could have been a shapeshifter wearing his brother's face again. And two - if it was a real guy, he might end up having a lot of enemies for wearing the face like that.

"Did he act like Dean too?"

Random things are very dangerous.

She shook her head. "Nope, nothing like him."

"Well, that's good. Otherwise I would say that it was a sign of the Apocalypse or something... I don't think the world could handle two of Dean."

[manorsuperman]

"It wouldn't matter." A slight pause, then her voice was quieter. "While my parents died in Smallville's first meteor shower, Jason died in the second one." A weak grin. "I'd be careful around me. Get too close and you'll be hit by a meteor."

"My mom died in a fire in my nursery. Dad to save me and my brother. And my girlfriend Jess..." Sam sighed. "Let's say I'll take on the meteor if you're willing to take on a firey death."

He was trying to joke, but it wasn't really there.

She looked across the table at him. She felt sympathy for him, sure, but it was more than that. Suddenly, she was questioning just how much this was just a chance meeting. It felt different now, like somehow they were meant to cross paths.

She reached across and put her hand over his. "Bring it on," she said softly.

Sam gave her a weak smile, looking at his food while biting his lip, then looked at their hands.

"I just don't want you getting hurt. Girls I tend to like end up getting in over their heads. I've learned to just keep my distance."

He sounded like Clark. He sounded exactly like Clark.

"...believe it or not, I understand, from both sides. And I've had a guy tell me that before. I dated him off and on for...at least four years, maybe five. He was always so afraid something was going to happen to me, kept breaking up with me for reasons I didn't understand. But I understand now. If being around you is really that dangerous, fine." She squeezed his hand. "I'm not afraid."

"I'm also not a one place person. Traveling around makes it hard to be anything more than friends with anyone."

When had the conversation turned into them talking about being in a relationship? Sam was confused. Not that he minded... somewhat... but when had this happened? Usually he saw when this happened but he was blindsided now...

She nodded. "I know...and I'm not saying that's where this is going...but if it does, I don't mind the traveling." She paused for a second, looking away. "Actually, it might be better that way..."

"Dating someone who doesn't live locally, or having an excuse to escape town?" He asked softly, seeing her look.

"The former." She bit her lip. "I do my own traveling from time to time, but with the kind of luck I've had with men lately...getting close to someone again makes me panic a little."

"Don't worry, you're in the same boat with me. My last relationships haven't ended well either."

[manorsuperman]

She looked down at her soup, her face taking on a darkened sort of sadness. "You have no idea," she mumbled.

"Well, I can't promise you wine and roses, but let's just say we'll see what happens, ok?"

She nodded grinning a little, but suddenly she felt a lot more self conscious. She drew back her hand a little, blushing and letting out a soft, nervous laugh. "Suddenly I don't feel so hungry."

"Well, we're at a buffet. There's no real set limit on how much you have to eat..."

"I should at least finish my soup and have a little rice. Otherwise I'll wake up starving."

"The egg rolls are good too." Sam was almost done with his plate and looked over his shoulder, contemplating seconds.

Lana was contemplating something entirely different. "Sam...how did we go from talking about the strange things of the world to talking about a relationship? I mean...we barely know each other."

"Damned if I know. I was wondering that myself."

[manorsuperman]

"Add that to the long list of weird, I guess."
