For almost two weeks now, Lana had been in Montana, dealing with the aftermath of Sam's goodbye via the ranch not far from her hotel. If she had been in the right mind to consider it, she would be amazed at her maturity. At the beginning of this year, she would have drown her sorrows in wine. She'd had a glass or two since, but nothing so excessive as she would have previously. Even if the lack of sleep caused her to fall a few times before managing to actually mount the horse she'd chosen to ride, it was a far cry from self-destruction, and a sign that finally, after all this time, she was showing signs of growth.

When she got back to her room, she headed straight for the bed and let herself fall face down. Her chest tightened, her heart thoroughly aware of how empty it was. Had her body not been so tired, she would have cried again, but instead she slipped into what she hoped would be a peaceful sleep.

But it never was, was it?

Lana saw a blur of pitchforks and fire, heard the anger of the crowd, images of a dark past flashing for half a minute before the flames roared violently before her. When they settled, she found herself in the Talon apartment, staring at the fireplace. She looked around before a sound behind her drew her attention. The face she met was a reflection of her own, while at the same time not at all herself.

"Lana, my dear. It's been a while, hasn't it?"

Lana stiffened in the realization of who stood before her. "Isobel."

"Always the smart girl, weren't you?"

"You--this is a dream. You can't be here."

"Don't be ridiculous," Isobel said with a laugh. "I'm always here with you, Lana." The witch stepped closer to her descendant. "Can't you feel me? That 'darkness' you try so hard to push down? You and I are tied together."

"No." Lana shook her head. "No, we're not."

A smirk. "We'll see, won't we?"

"Maybe not... but it's not going to change things."

He was lying to himself. He wanted her back so badly. But this battle... he was Lucifer's vessel! He couldn't put her into that line of fire...

Needing some air, he got up and waved to his brother, motioning at the phone before heading outside to lean against the Impala.

And she was headed across the parking lot toward her rental.

"So that's it, huh?" A little bit of bitterness was starting to leak in. "There's no hope I'll ever have you back?"

Sam bit his lip. He had to tell her so she'd understand.

"Lana... I'm Lucifer's vessel."

[manorsuperman]

That made her stop just short of her destination.

"You're what?"

[likely_evil]

"He came to me in a dream and told me that I'm his vessel. And he's told me that he's going to keep coming to me until I say yes and let him in. I'm... I'm back with Dean now to prevent it but I can't... it's the devil Lana. I don't want you to face that possibility with me. Until this is over, as much as it hurts... I can't."

Dreams. More dreams.

She took a few more steps to the car so she could lean against something, then rubbed at her face again.

"I'm not sure if that's going to be an option. We seem to be having similar issues."

Sam pushed away from the Impala and started to pace. "What do you mean?"

[manorsuperman]

"I had a dream about Isobel. She said I never got rid of her, that she's a part of me...I don't know, maybe it was just a dream, but with all the things going on right now I'm not so sure."

Cursing under his breath, he stopped pacing.

"Have you been feeling like yourself still? Blank spots in your memory?"

[manorsuperman]

She nodded, though he couldn't see her.

"Yeah, I'm fine. You kinda woke me from it, actually."

[likely_evil]

"Well, I guess I have good timing then," he chuckled sadly.

[manorsuperman]

"I feel like I've lived a scene from The Wizard of Oz, but without Toto."

[likely_evil]

Sam thought for a moment, then smirked to himself. "Was I the Scarecrow or the TinMan?"

[manorsuperman]

Lana laughed quietly. "I think you'd be the Wizard, actually." A smirk. "Dean's the Scarecrow."

"You know that the Scarecrow ends up with Dorothy..."

[manorsuperman]

Aw, that made her smile. "I was thinking more along the lines of, 'if he only had a brain', but when you put it that way..."

[likely_evil]

Sam took a deep breath.

"Lana... when we defeat Lucifer... the first thing I'm going to do is come find you and beg forgiveness and hope you still love me."

[manorsuperman]

Lana's eyes began to water and for a second she couldn't speak.

"I'll always love you, Sam." Her voice started to crack. "You're my soulmate, remember?"

Sam looked at the ground, smiling a bit. "I remember. I'm doing this because I love you. Just... pray that I can get this done so I can come back to you, ok?"

If he gave her something to work towards, maybe she would let him stay away until it was done. And maybe afterwards...

No, he could give her hope, but he had to remember that he had a lot to do before that was ever going to happen.

Tears ran down her face, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. Her voice threatened to give out on her.

"I've been praying for you. Everyday." Not quite everyday, but very close to it. Close enough.

"Well, it's working a bit. I'm back with Dean again at least."

[manorsuperman]

Although she was an emotional person, emotional outburst weren't usually her thing. There were thoughts she kept to herself, but with as little sleep as she'd been getting lately, some things were bound to start spilling out, and possibly not making any sense at all.

"I've suffered a lot in my life, and I always wondered why God would let me go through all of it. I think I understand now." She took a shaky breath before speaking again. "And don't you dare add that to your list of things to be guilty about. Life is painful no matter what, and I'd rather that pain have a purpose than be meaningless. The people in your life are there for a reason. Don't let anyone, especially Lucifer, push those people out of your life."

Lana finally began to wipe away her tears with her free hand. "If you need to stay away physically, I understand that, I accept that. But if you need me, call. Please call."

"I'll call."

He could hear the breakdown and he hated himself for knowing he was causing it.

"Even if I don't need you. If you need me. Or just feel that we could use each other. I'll call."

"Thank you."

She didn't know what else to say, so she just tried to calm herself.

He gave her a moment, then turned so that he was resting his arms on the hood of the Impala.

"I love you."
