Lana hums a merry tune as she swims past her aunt, not even stopping for a bite to eat. Food is just not on her mind this morning. What or rather who is on her mind is the beautiful human woman she met just a week ago. Whenever she can she's been stealing away trips to the surface, sometimes just to get a minute or two with the adorable and beautiful Kara.

Today she has something else on her agenda. Today she's on the search for something special. She has no idea what it is yet, but she will know when she's found it.

And find it she does. It's hidden in the sand, right near a shell she'd picked up to examine. It's the glint of silver that make her curious, and once she had it in her palm, she knows it would be the perfect surprise for her human friend.

Friend. Is that even the word to describe her?

Lana closes her fist around the charm, holding it close to her heart and letting the excitement build inside her before shooting off toward the shore as fast as her fins could carry her. With any luck, Kara would be waiting for her, and she couldn't wait to see the look on her face when she returned the necklace that had been missing from her neck.

Kara's been spending more and more time at the water as of late, and while her mother is suspicious, she's not trying to discourage her. She thinks it's a boy, and Kara is content to let her think that for now, as the real truth of it is much stranger and would keep her from going to the water at all. For now, however, she's simply lingering in the sun, her fingers trailing in the water as she rests on a rock and waits for her mermaid to join her.

Lana breaks the surface of the water, keeping her treasure hidden for the moment. It doesn't take very long at all to spot her human, waiting there on the rocks.

"Kara," she says as that strangle warmth fills her cold chest. "I brought you something."

Kara turns to her with a smile, before tipping her head to the side. She wasn't expecting a gift, which means she feels unprepared without one of her own, but she's not displeased with the turn of events.

"You did? I don't have anything for you."

"It's okay," she says as she swims closer. "The look on your face will be enough."

Once she reaches the rock, she opens her hand to reveal the necklace she found.

Her eyes widen in return, and she reaches down to take the necklace in her hand, peering at it curiously. "It's beautiful. Where did you find it?"

"In the sand not far from my home. Someone must have dropped it off the side of a boat." That's what makes the most sense to her. There are no sunken ships in the area.

She frowns slightly at that, wondering if there was someone, somewhere, missing it. But she shakes it off because she can at least appreciate the gesture. "Thank you."

Lana picks up on that frown and adds one of her own. "Is something wrong?"

She pauses, before glancing over and shaking her head. "No, not at all. I was just thinking about the person who lost it. They may be missing it."

The mermaid tips her head, considering that a moment. She's never really considered the former owners of the things she finds on the ocean floor.

"Then it is even more important that someone takes care of it."

"I suppose it is," she says softly, curling her fingers around the chain. "I do love it. Really."

She smiles, then pushes herself up to sit beside Kara, enjoying the feel of the breeze across her bare skin.

"I hoped you would."

"Then I am glad I met your expectations." She grins in return, moving so she can sit next to her.

Lana lifts a hand to run her fingers through Kara's hair.

"I know it's only been a few days...but I missed you."

Kara tips her head into the touch, gently, just enjoying that familiar gentle caress that she thinks she could really come to relish, one way or another. "I missed you too. I was hoping you would come back."

She smiles softly. "How could I resist?"

Kara's head ducks as a blush starts to color her cheeks. "I could probably think of a few reasons."

Lana tilts her head, not understanding at all. "Like what?"

"I'm just a human?" she gives a small shrug. "I can't go with you?"

"I know. That's why I came to you."

"But you don't want me to go with you?"

Lana paused a moment. "That would be nice, yes. Like you said, you're human."

Kara pauses for a moment, before turning her eyes out to see the rest of the water. "Sometimes I wish I could go with you."

The mermaid is surprised. "You would give up all you are to go with me?"

"It isn't much to give up, really." She means it more in the sense that it isn't really a question and she would take anything over the world above. "Everyone here expects certain things of me, and that's not what I want. I want to be free."

Lana smiles, her eyes sparkling and her entire being. "Freedom is the essence of the Sea. She is vast and deep and open to all who would treat Her with the respect She deserves." She's clearly very excited about this. "Would you like me to petition Her for you?"

"Petition her?" She frowns for a moment as she tries to understand that. "To be like you?"

She nods. "I don't know if it's possible, but I've seen Her priestesses do powerful things."

She glances back over her shoulder towards the shore, and hesitates, but just for a moment. The only person who would really miss her is Clark, and she would able to swim back and see him when she could. And he would understand.

At least, she hoped he would.

She turns back to Lana and nods. "Yes. I would like that."

Lana can't hold her joy inside. She slips off the rock and into the water, leaping out of the water seconds later. She loops back up to the surface in front of Kara, smiling brighter than she can remember ever having done before.

"There's so much I can't wait to show you."

Her smile widens in response as she watches her, before nodding her agreement. "There's so much I can't wait to see."
